Sleman Regent Ibnu Subiyanto stood trial on Thursday for allegedly embezzling the regional budget allocated for student textbook procurement in 2004, which caused Rp 12 billion (US$1.17 million) in losses.
In their indictment, state prosecutors said the regent had enriched himself and others. The prosecutors said Ibnu had directly appointed state publisher Balai Pustaka for the project, funded by the regional budget. It turned out that the state company subcontracted the project to PT Putra Insan Pramudita (PIP) at an inflated price and PIP director Murod Irawan offered the project to seven other companies.
The markup in the procurement project totaled Rp 12 billion, prosecutors said.
Regional legislative council member Jarot Subiyanto was sentenced to five years in jail in the same case. Murod, another suspect in the graft case, remains on the run.
The panel of judges adjourned the trial until next Thursday to hear Ibnu’s rebuttal.
Sleman District Court spokesman Muslim said Ibnu did not need to be detained because of his active role as regent. The regent also stands accused of abuse of power as a secondary charge.
