SEMARANG: In order to tackle the garbage problem in the province, which produces around 12,000 tons of waste every day, the Central Java administration plans to boost its reuse, reduce and recycle (3R) program.
"The 3R movement has proven very effective in reducing the waste debit at the last dump site," head of the Cenntral Java environment office Djoko Sutrisno said Saturday.
He said each one of the provinces 32 million people dump some 400 grams of garbage every day, making a combined total of 12,000 tons of waste to manage every day.
"The waste management is not yet good because most dump sites still use an open dumping system," Djoko said, adding that this should be changed to the type of sanitary landfill system already implemented at several dump sites in the area. - JP
