The PNG Garamuts emerged the Under-19 champions of the East Asia-Pacific Region after defeating the Digicel Vanuatu by 172 runs in the Grand Final at Amini Park, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on Saturday.
According to a press release sent to The Jakarta Post, PNG won the toss and elected to bat in overcast conditions and scored freely early on, reaching 24 without loss before Lega Tau was well caught by Karl Laau from the bowling of Niko Unavalu.
Heni Siaka was hitting everything in the middle, and started to free his arms, ably supported by middle-order batsman Tony Ura (27) and Jason Kila (48).
The talented Siaka announced himself on the international stage, scoring his maiden century for PNG, by far the best innings of the tournament.
Siaka was eventually dismissed for 101, but by then the damage had been done and PNG raced towards a huge total, batting their full 50 overs reaching 8 for 276.
It was to take a monumental effort by Vanuatu to chase down these runs, and early on the fielding talents of PNG rose to the fore, with 2 magnificent run-outs reducing Vanuatu to 2 for 31.
Vanuatu fought on valiantly, with captain Simpson Obed (17) and Trevor Langa (16) getting starts, before they were eventually dismissed for 103 after 34 overs.
In the battle for third place at Colts Ground, Indonesia won the toss and elected to bat.
Against a strong Fijian attack, while wickets were falling regularly, the Indonesians continued to dig in, reaching 104 in the 33rd over in a rain-affected innings.
Captain Putra Dharmawangsa was the best of the batsman, finishing on an unbeaten 25.
With time lost due to the rain interval, the revised target as per the Duckworth Lewis system was reduced to 94 from 36 overs.
Several batsmen got starts before Inoke Cama (30 not-out) played a mature innings to guide his team home with 6 wickets in hand.
