Comments: `Children's gate to porn'

Sophisticated cell phones and online social networks like Facebook have been accused of providing children access to pornography amid the government's weakness to block and filter adult content over the Internet, an expert said Wednesday. "When children are equipped with sophisticated cell phones, they can easily access pornographic material like pictures and videos," University of Indonesia criminologist, Ni Made Martini told The Jakarta Post, after a seminar about online child pornography at the university's campus in Depok, West Java.

Your comments:
In Singapore, dodgy sites are screened by the Internet provider, thereby blocking users from accessing them.

There is even a warning message that these sites are blocked in Singapore. If it can be done that way for Indonesia then young people can surf the net more safely without reducing communication tools such as cell phones and laptops and the Internet themselves as contraband.

By prohibiting cellphones, Facebook and other hi-tech stuff you are not going to prevent children and teenagers from accessing pornography. I personally don't know anybody who finds with pornography by using his cell phone or Facebook.

The issue here is teaching teenagers about sexuality in a normal way, instead of making it a taboo. As I experienced, the only way teenagers in Indonesia can learn something about sexuality is by watching pornography. That's not always a good source if you ask my opinion. I think that problem should be solved, instead of prohibiting things.

Complaint about services not libel--June 5, Online

Citizens are encouraged to continue to file complaints about poor public services despite the controversial detention of a housewife, who is charged with libel for complaining about the service of Omni International Hospital in Tangerang via email. Rudi Satrio of the University of Indonesia's School of Law said Friday that complaining about public services did not constitute defamation. "Article 310 of the Criminal Code on defamation exempts complaints about public services or *self defense in case of exigency'," Rudi said.

He, therefore, blamed prosecutors for charging housewife Prita Mulyasari with defamation articles under the Criminal Code and the cyber law.

Your comments:
Of course it's not! If that's the case, all local newspaper would have to shut down as they all have sections that allow citizens to vent their grief over poor services received! Are all these other people that have ever complaint also subject to defamation lawsuits? This is clearly an example of the rich and powerful bullying the weak citizens.

The doctors clearly gave the wrong diagnosis and treatment repeatedly and still have the audacity to sue the patient when they went on a crusade to expose their incompetence! A previous article cited an official as saying that it is probably a competitor spreading the rumor. It is clear just from newspaper reporting of the facts surrounding the case that this clearly bribed official could come out with other facts in clear favor of the plaintiff! Oh ya... one more thing, should I also no longer write in this section for fear of being sued? Like I give a damn.

The hospital is a place where everyone goes confident that everything possible will be done to help them, no matter if the health problem is small or big. If somehow that confidence is broken due to the negligence of staff or shoddy service, it is normal for any person to complain to there family or friends. On the other hand, when someone is very satisfied or happy with service, they tend to praise the hospital.

Now someone has complained and the hospital has sued. But on the other hand, have they ever given a medal of appreciation to anyone who has praised their services? Maybe its a question they should ask themselves.
