The Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) has alleged a mark-up on the price of haj pilgrimages has been made by the Religious Affairs Ministry, which organizes the pilgrimages, and has asked the Corruption Eradication Commission to closely monitor the ministry.

Ade Irawan, ICW coordinator for public service monitoring, said Tuesday that the corruption watchdog has found evidence of price mark-ups for the haj pilgrimage.

"We have data showing there have been mark-ups," he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The government and the House of Representatives have raised haj fees by US$84 this year.

The ICW, however, said that in fact the fee should have decreased.

The ICW previously alleged that haj funds were embezzled by senior officials at the Religious Affairs Ministry. (dre)
