Malaysia would spank Indonesia in a conventional war. Malaysia has a number of commonwealth allies it could call upon including Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand etc. Who does Indonesia have?
In fact Malaysian troops would not even have to engage the TNI - All they would have to do is drop weapons and ammunition the the plethora of disenchanted ethnic minority groups all to eager to topple the tyranny of the Javanese.
But really what makes the Indonesians think they can claim the Ambalat waters? They cannot even police their own borders to stop the trafficking of drugs, black market weapons and illegal immigrants. If you can't stop border jumpers moving about Indonesia with impunity what makes you think you can stop Malaysian battalions?

I find Indonesian rhetorics very amusing; they think we Malaysians need them (Indonesia) like we need oxygen. Yes, we do need foreign workers alright to do many things that our own people won't do but we certainly do not need Indonesian workers if we choose not to need them, we can always substitute Indonesian workers with those from Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Vietnam, Pakistan, China, Thailand, Africa and Philippines (many of them are already in Malaysia)....these people are more than willing to take over menial jobs in Malaysia that Indonesians are dearly holding on to. These Indonesian workers remit home annually to Indonesia RM2-3 billion (RM1=Rupiah2500), generating desperately-needed income for Indonesia, not to mention the desperately needed jobs Malaysia provide them. All menial workers at my office..from toilet cleaners to gardeners..are Indonesians. I've talked to them, I know it, life is pretty tough for them in Indonesia, they thank Allah for Malaysia, Malaysia is fresh oxygen to them. We desperately need foreign workers but we don't desperately need Indonesian workers. Our government is keeping Indonesian workers here out of deference for Indonesian government. Dr Mahathir threatened once to kick out all Indonesian workers; The Indonesian government reaction to Mahathir's plan was very hostile, practically declaring Mahathir's action as an act of war! The Indonesian government openly pleaded with Mahathir that sending off Indonesian workers would worsen Indonesia's employment situation. You Indonesians should go back to the archives, stop using Ambalat just to get hysteria over Malaysia. No matter what you like or dislike, we Malaysians will always defend our interests in Ambalat in whatever ways just as you yourself have decided to defend your own interests there too albeit in a very hysterical way. Ambalat is a disputed territory; you better get used to it! Screaming at us won't make us leave Ambalat....the ball is in your court, you want to shoot at us? Make our day!!

Nusa Dua, you are so laughable just as Jan mentioned. Your comment speaks for itself. Please save yourself from further humiliation.

Malaysia has more than 2 millions Indonesians here work and mostly they are treated well. Some even choose to stay here forever (like my grandfather). Of course there is some bad treatment cases - and we have to correct that. But for many others, Malaysia has been good to them.
How about violent criminals done by Indonesian here - my neighbour was robbed with parang yielding indonesians and the whole family tied up inside the house? We did not go out and tell that the whole indonesians are bad people.
Yet, few cases emerged on bad treatment, Indonesians quickly want to declare war on Malaysia and accuses Malaysians of "Malingsia".
What kind of people is that ? Go think...

Eh no, you are mixing things up. When Suharto was "toppled" he was only toppled politically and his departure did not affect the TNI; the TNI were still in place and strong as civilian restrainers and feared by the population. It could be said the toppling of Suharto gave hope to the populous and with that subdued desires to demonstrate / stand up for their rights. Clearly, nothing has changed and in fact things have gotten worse in many respects. If the TNI went to war with the Malaysian armed forces they would lose and be weakened both in terms of their ability to retrain the Indonesian civilian population and in terms of being able to maintain people's fear of them. If Indonesia went to war with Malaysia I reckon there is a good chance Jakarta would lose the entire archipelago outside Java and parts of Sumatra, and I say "Cheers" to that!

To Nusa Dua : your assessment is so way off. If Indonesia were to to disintegrate it would have happened 8-10 years ago when Soeharto came down and the country was in complete chaos with ethnic and religious infigthing in Ambon, Borneo, Poso, Aceh and so on. It had all the hallmark of potential fragmentation. But contrary to what many foreigners think it didn't happen and you know why ? coz the reality is there are just not many separatist sentiments among indonesians. Sure, you see some separatist flag waving here and there but most people prefer to remain part of RI. Now, compare that to situation in Malaysia now, where ethnic Indians are being suppressed or chinese treated like second class citizens. No wonder not too many Malaysians demand democracy, coz if that happens it would have easily disintegrate into ethnic lines. The same with Singapore.

Poor Malaysia....
a kind of socially underdeveloped country without a real democracy, without real human rights but lots of underlying social tensions between ethnic groups. In all these measurements well behind Indonesia now. Don't give them a reason to hide all these flaws under an increasing nationalism by going to war with them. Let Malaysia sort out their own problems first, become a democratic country, respect human rights and treat their ethnic groups fairly and equally. Same is valid for fair treatment of foreign workers (incl. TKI) !

Funny, you are at odds with the industry experts Janes and the English language at the same time! So you think a conflict would end up with Indonesian troops in KL?! Now that is funny! Look at what happened last time Indonesia dared to take on a real army rather than civilians, against Malaysia and with plans to capture Brunei in the 60's; oh dear! You live in cuckoo land if you think an armed conflict would spiral out badly of control for Malaysia. It is Indonesian armed forces with the equipment, training and motivation problem. It is Indonesia with the successionist / independence problem. Even Australia recently has published (in its 2009 military planning review) the likelihood the RI will "fragment" within the next 20 years. Should Indonesia be foolish enough to go to war with Malaysia I suggest to you the most likely outcome would be massive opportunistic domestic insurrection in the regions who want to be shot of Jakarta / Java, a hefty Indonesian military defeat (I suspect Singapore and others might have a go as well) and with that the prospect the RI looses larges swathes of territory. I think Malaysia and others would welcome the opportunity to put to rest the issues with its problem neighbour. It seems all you have is nationalistic fervor and a jealous hatred for Malaysia; a hilarious and very dangerous thing ;-)
