An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 hit Bengkulu on Thursday morning immediately followed by a smaller 4-magnitude jolt. No injuries were reported.

The Meteorology, Geophysics, and Climatology Agency reported that the quake hit the area at 7:20 a.m. The quake epicenter was located 61 kilometers southwest of the province and 22 kilometers below sea level.

Dadang Permana, head of the local weather agency, said the quake was caused by movement between the Indo-Australia and Eurasian plates.

“It's just an everyday earthquake for Bengkulu,” he said, referring to the province's quake-prone area and frequent earthquakes, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
