The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has replaced the head of the Banten Prosecutor's Office, but the decision had nothing to do with the controversial case of Prita Mulyasari, AGO spokesman Jasman Pandjatitan said.

Speaking at a press conference Friday, Jasman confirmed that former head Dondy K Soedir-man had been replaced but reaffirmed that the case of Prita, a mother held in Tangerang for three weeks on defamation charges before being released, was not an influential factor.

"I am not aware that the replacement has anything to do with Prita's case. A special meeting about the case has not made any conclusions yet. I can't comment on the issue right now."

However, he said the decision was made after the AGO detected significant public dissatisfaction with the handling of the case.

"This is in line with the AGO's internal policy to continue improving its quality and professionalism by immediately acting on the demands of the public."

So far the AGO has questioned four prosecutors about technical matters related to the case. Apart from the replaced prosecutor head, the Tangerang chief prosecutor, Suyono, head of the general crime division at the Tangerang prosecutor's office, Irvan Jaya Aziz and Rachmawati Utami, a prosecutor handling Prita's case, have also been summoned.

Particular attention was drawn to the use of Article 27 of the Information and Electronic Transaction Law against Prita.

If she is found guilty of violating this law, she could face a 6-year jail term and a fine of up to Rp 1 billion.

Prosecutors have also denied accusations they received bribes from Omni International Hospital to charge Prita with the maximum sentence.

Junior Attorney General for Supervision, Hamzah Tadja, said an investigation into the allegations of bribery was still ongoing.

"Therefore I will not provide further comment on that."

"I also plan to summon the hospital representatives to clarify several issues related to the case."

Great work of the AG Office. To replace the head of the Banten Prosecutor's Office quickly and investigate the officers involved are a good sign that the AGO is getting tough. But it is also sad to note that Prita suffered detention for 3 weeks before she was released, and only after public and media outcry.
