A Pertamina liquid petroleum gas (LPG) depot in Makassar, South Sulawesi, caught fire on Saturday
morning. Authorities have yet to make an official statement regarding the
incident.
The blaze raged dozens of meters high before local fire fighters arrived on the scene, which was still being contained at the time of this writing.
An employee at the station, who refused to give his name, told
The Jakarta Post that the fire was started at around 9 a.m. as a LPG tanker truck was filling up at the station.
The employee said that the fuel hose was loosened, spraying fuel everywhere. He, however, did not know what sparked the blaze.
Paniced nearby residents began to move their belongings from their homes.
Local Pertamina spokesperson Rosina Nurdin confirmed the incident but said that the LPG supply would not be affected.
Rosina said that the station held 1,000 metric tones of LPG when the incident occurred, but added that fire did not reach the main fuel tanks. (dre)
