A number of green groups are conducting a survey on orangutans in Kalimantan, the population of which has sharply declined due to intense deforestation.

Animal protection manager of the Palung Foundation forest conservation group, Tito P. Indrawan, said Saturday there was no accurate data on the islands orangutan population, even though it is the primate's primary habitat.

The most recent survey on orangutans in Gunung Palung National Park, released in 2001, recorded some 2,500 orangutans in Kalimantan. In 2004 the Population and Habitat Viability Assessment (PHVA) estimated 6,675 orangutans lived in West Kalimantan's rainforests.

Tito said a male orangutan needs about two hectares of area to live. “But in reality, it’s not easy to locate an orangutan in the national park,” he said to state news agency Antara. The 90,000 hectare park is situated between North Kayong and Ketapang regencies.
