The West Jakarta administration held a Car-Free Day on Sunday in the Kota Tua area, one of the city's most historic spots.
"The event was held to promote cleaner air as well as to help preserve Kota Tua's heritage buildings, which are increasingly threatened by the poor air quality," head of the municipality's environmental office, Yusiono Anwar Supalal, said after the event.
He declared the event had been quite a success.
"Today's carbon monoxide content dropped to 0.9 ppm (parts per million) from an average of 3 ppm on normal working days," he said.
Rahmat, a food vendor in the Kota Tua area, said he did not see the event as having a big influence on Jakartans.
"The event is only held once in a while, so I doubt it will change Jakartans' bad habits, such as throwing garbage in the streets," he said. (dis)
