State owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) said Monday it would need Rp 3.2 trillion (US$3.2 billion) to fund connections to 1.3 new subscribers this year.

"So far we just have Rp 1 trillion," PLN President Director Fahmi Mochtar said during hearings with legislators and housing associations at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Monday.

"This is a serious problem for us. We want to help people but we don't have enough money," he said.

Fahmi noted that only 65 percent of Indonesians have access to electricity. Reaching the remaining 35 percent is increasingly costly as many of them reside in remote areas.

Also, Fahmi said, PLN itself does not have enough sources of electricity, and he therefore called on the government to speed up the construction of power plants.

The government is currently embarking on the second phase of its plan to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity. (Naf)
