Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) expressed disappointment with the National Police for failing to heed its report of an alleged breach of the election rules by presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono.

Bawaslu member Wirdyaningsih said the decision had put the police’s commitment to neutrality in doubt.

“The police should have actively sought evidence, rather than relying on testimony of the candidates’ team members,” she said Tuesday.

The Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) reported Yudhoyono and Boediono to the police for alleged early campaigning after the two delivered speeches during a closed-door gathering with their supporters on May 30. The event was aired by Metro TV and TVRI channels.

Previously the National Police had refused to follow up Bawalu’s report filed against the General Elections Commission for its alleged role in 156 cases of ballot mix-ups, which deprived voters of their rights. The police said the case was not within their authority.
