MATARAM: On Monday police arrested a bogus journalist, identified as Abdul Salam Ibrahim, who requested some Rp 9 million (US$900) from the social welfare division of the Mataram municipality secretariat.
Mataram Police chief Adj. Comr. Arief Yuswanto said Abdul, who claimed to be a correspondent for Jakarta-based Merdeka daily, had asked for the money to pay for his trip to a seminar organized by the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) in Jakarta.
"He was arrested as he was about to withdraw the money. We had earlier received a report from the municipality that there was a journalist without a press card requesting money," Arief said.
Abdul admits he was taught by a friend in Jakarta how to make the proposal to get money from the municipality. - JP
