Aussie police probe human trafficking ring

JAKARTA: Members of the Australia Federal Police arrived in Bengkulu on Tuesday as part of investigations into an alleged human trafficking ring responsible for rampant trafficking of Afghani people to Australia.
Bengkulu Governor Agusrin Maryono Najamuddin told tempointeraktif.com news portal that the Australian police had sought access to a suspected broker identified as J.
Last week, Bengkulu Police had arrested J along with 46 Australia-bound Afghan people. The police also named two suspects who had allegedly helped arrange the Afghan people's trip to Australia.
"They chose Bengkulu because the town is safer and closer to Christmas Island in Australia," Bengkulu police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Agung Setya said as quoted by kompas.com.
The government is detaining the Afghan people at Bengkulu Immigration Office, pending a decision whether or not to deport them back to Afghanistan. -JP
