The North Maluku provincial administration is losing Rp 23 billion (US$2.3 million) in revenue annually from local seaport retributions, a Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) comisssion chairman says Wednesday.
“There are 15 local seaports that never pay their retribution to the administration,” said Badarudin Gailea, North Maluku DPRD chairman of Commission C on development affairs, to state news agency
Antara.
Badarudin said the council had discussed the matter with North Maluku Transportation Agency and was planning to deploy teams to urge the operators of the seaports to pay their retributions.
Several of the seaports are operated by mining companies.
“If they refuse to pay, we would ask the administration to stop the seaports' activities,” he said.
Badarudin said that North Maluku administration should pay serious attention to its locally generated revenue, which was important for infrastucture development in the province. (dre)
