JAKARTA: Musicians live off their music, they say. Singer Nugie wants the environment to live off his music too.

The musician, who is a longtime volunteer for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), has taken on an unusual approach in raising funds for activities that could help save Mother Earth: He does it through selling his songs as ringback tones.

“I think people would rather hear music than speeches about the environment. Being an environmentalist doesn’t mean you have to be a [street] activist. It can be done in various ways through various means,” Nugie said, as quoted by entertainment website Kapanlagi.com on Tuesday.

“I think it’s the only donation program done through selling RBTs [ringback tones],” he added.

Composing a song specially for his altruistic purpose, Nugie said that he would not commercialize it.
He will receive no income from the song as half of the revenue from RBT sales will go to the telco and the half to the WWF. — JP
