PURWOKERTO: The Banyumas regency administration in Central Java admits it has been lacking in efforts to improve the regency's environment, citing its failure since 1993 to win the nation's most prestigious award for clean and green practices, the Adipura.
The local legislative council has accused the Banyumas administration of lacking motivation to manage the environment well, particularly in the regency capital Purwokerto, despite the successes of neighboring regencies Cilacap, Purbalingga and Banjarnegara in winning Adipura awards.
"The Banyumas regency administration has never cared about the environment," council speaker Suherman said Wednesday.
"Perhaps the executive leaders have no shame anymore."
Similar concerns were voiced by Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) councilors Sardi Susanto and Wiyono.
The government earlier this month announced the Adipura award winners, based on a 2008 survey. - JP
