Mataram District Court sentenced former West Nusa Tenggara Governor Lalu Serinata Thursday to five years in prison and fined him Rp 400 million (US$ 40,000) for his involvement in the misuse of the provincial budget, which resulted in Rp 10 billion in state losses.
Presiding Judge Putu Suika ordered the convict be put under city arrest because of his failing health, tempointeraktif.com reported.
The verdict requires the defendant to serve an extra six months in prison, should he fail to pay the fine and to pay Rp 766 million in restitution to the state.

This is weird. After stealing Rp 10 billion, he was given a Rp 400 million fine and five years in prison. Maybe this might seem fair, but if we look back to the principles of criminal law, it is stated that criminal law was created to make the criminal never commit his crime again. Giving an insufficient punishment will not make that happen. There must be additional punishment!

Why only 766 million in restitution? Sure, he is paying a Rp 400 million fine, but that should be on top of the Rp 1 billion he stole. Why doesn't the government seek all their money back?

Activities that do not revolve around malls --June 14, p. 2
Playing traditional games and making decorations from janur (young coconut leaves) at Ragunan Zoo, South Jakarta, were alternative activities suggested for Jakartans looking for things to do at the weekend. Residents generally flock to the capital's ubiquitous malls to relax at the weekend because of a lack of alternatives. The outdoor activities were a breath of fresh air for about 100 people who participated in an event called "Wiken Tanpa ke Mall", which literally means a weekend without going to the shopping mall.

Indeed, it was really fun, and I am glad to know that we have somewhere else to go rather than just malls. I believe Jakarta has many places to visit, spend quality time with friends and family, places where we can be more creative and active, places where we could share and learn. I would like to know about other similar activities that do not revolve around malls. Let's explore and enjoy our beloved Jakarta.

It was a great pleasure to join the Wiken Tanpa Ke Mall (WTM = Weekend without going to mall) activity. I can't wait for another WTM program. I hope there are more of those types of activities, so I can make more friends in a new community.
