The Ministry of Public Works has allocated Rp 25 billion (US$2.45 million) for rehabilitation projects in four border areas between Indonesia and Malaysia in West Kalimantan.

“We are now asking for tenders [for the project],” Budi Yuwono, director of the ministry’s Cipta Karya division that manages housing and residential infrastructure, was quoted as saying in Pontianak by Antara state news agency.

Among the projects to be delivered using the budget were sanitation systems and road systems, to be done in Aruk (Sambas regency), Jagoi Babang (Bengkayang), Entikong (Sanggau) and Badau (Kapuas Hulu).

Budi said the rehabilitation projects were being done to reduce disparities between the Indonesian side of the border and the Malaysian side.

Last year, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked the West Kalimantan administration to make the development of the border between Indonesia and Malaysia a priority.

To improve access and enhance economic development in the area, the provincial administration has planned to build an 847-kilometer road to connect Paloh and Kapuas Hulu. The project will cost around Rp 4.7 trillion.
