Hundreds of worshippers after finishing their prayer each Friday, mingle with office workers on the crowded Jl. Kampung Lima, which connects Jl. Sabang and Jl. M.H. Thamrin in Central Jakarta.

Most of them stop by to look at items displayed by dozens of street vendors selling clothes,
books, toys, electricity devices and snacks.

Such a crowd forms only on Fridays, the day street vendors are permitted to display their products.

“We are only permitted to trade on Fridays,” a book seller said.

However, central Jakarta’s municipal administration plans to tidy up street vendors on Jl. Sabang by setting up a dedicated culinary center on Jl. Kampung Lima.

The culinary center is not yet complete, but the municipality said it would continue to allow the vendors to sell their wares on the street every Friday once the culinary center was established.

According to the plan, there will be 80 counters at designated spots in Kampung Lima. The area will accommodate 160 sellers, alternating between day and night shifts Central Jakarta Mayor Sylviana Murni said the construction was still underway.

Although the administration wanted to launch the center for Jakarta’s anniversary on June 22, Sylviana said the center would not be ready in time.
