Home Minister Mardiyanto says the government would not approve any bid for regional division until the end of the year, citing its current focus on the elections.

“We have received 20 proposals to form new regions, but until the end of 2009 there will be no new administrations established, I guess,” Mardiyanto said, as quoted by Antara state news agency, while opening a seminar on regional reforms attended by 17 governors from Sumatra, Java and Bali, in the Riau capital of Pekanbaru.

Indonesia held legislative elections on April 9 and will hold a presidential election on July 8.

The government was evaluating the performance of newly formed regions and would revoke regional division wherever it failed to bring prosperity within two years, Mardiyanto said.

During the seminar the governors would discuss, among other issues, the ideal number of provinces in West Indonesia, he said.
