North Jakarta to raid malls, office, hospital for smokers

The Jakarta Post ,  Jakarta   |  Thu, 06/18/2009 8:40 AM  |  Jakarta

North Jakarta administration plans to conduct raids across the municipal area targeting smokers ignoring the bylaw on smoking in restricted areas in Kelapa Gading on Thursday, tempointeraktif.com has reported.

Among the areas where the sweep will focus are Artha Gading and Kelapa Gading shopping malls, Mitra Kelapa Gading Hospital, Kelapa Gading subdistrict office, Al Azhar high school and Al-Musyawarah mosque and areas along Jl. Boulevard Kelapa Gading.

People found violating the regulation face up to six months in prison or a Rp 50 million (US$4,555) fine.

The smoking ban was imposed in January 2006 and was one of the key points in the administration’s bylaw on air pollution control.

Earlier this year, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo ordered local administrations to tighten their enforcement of the anti-smoking regulation. (dre)

Good move on this. I fully support this decision. I hate going into malls and having to put up with the smell of cigarettes. The government should start putting a ban on smoking in all indoors and air conditioned areas. In some overseas countries, smoking is even banned in bars and clubs.
