JAKARTA: A fire razed 10 houses Tuesday night in Tambora, West Jakarta, killing one infant.

Lorenza Sanjaya, 2, was found dead from burns Wednesday morning. Lorenza's mother, Rosalina, was not at the house during the fire.

The 30-year-old was reportedly hysterical after learning of her daughter's death.

"I was going round selling bread and cakes," she said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

Tambora district deputy head Isnawa Adji said the cause of the fire was a suspected electrical short circuit. Nine families, comprising 56 people, had lost their homes.

The fire started at around 7.30 p.m. and was extinguished two hours later. Twenty fire trucks were deployed to the scene.

Rosalina said her daughter was with Koko Wiwik, Rosalina's father, at the house on Tuesday. When the back of the house caught fire, Koko could not find his granddaughter.

Tambora Police officer First Insp. Hartono, who helped search for the victim, said that even after the fire was put out they still could not locate Lorenza.

"Just this morning, around 5.30 a.m., Lorenza was found buried under debris," he said. - JP
