A court in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has sentenced a police officer from
Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia, to six months jail for illegally
crossing the countries' shared border.
State news agency Antara reported that the court in Vanimo, PNG, also demanded Second Brig. Yohanes Imsen pay 5,000 PNG Kina (Rp 18.8 million or US$1,825) in fines.
Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Bagus Ekodanto said that Yohanes was arrested Wednesday riding a motorcycle with his partner on Wutung beach, a coastal border area between Indonesia and PNG.
Bagus said the Indonesian Consulate in Vanimo was working for the officer's release.
Wutung is a busy commercial border area, visited daily by residents from the two countries. Part of the area is located in Sandaun Province, PNG, and part is located in Indonesia's Keerom regency. (dre)
