The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained Hengky Samuel Daud, a suspect in several corruption cases involving the illegal procurement of fire trucks in several regions.

Hengky, who had been at large for three years, was arrested on Friday night at his house in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta at around 10:15 p.m., KPK spokesperson Johan Budi told journalists.

He was immediately taken to the KPK headquarters for questioning before being taken to his cell at the Jakarta Police headquarters.

Hengky, director of PT Istana Sarana Karya, was named a suspect in 2006 for his alleged involvement in illegal procurement in which the Home Ministry issued a circular telling regional administrations to purchase fire trucks from his company and its proxies.

The KPK also arrested Oentarto Sindung Mawardi, former Home Ministry director general of regional autonomy. At least eight governors and 13 mayors and regents were involved in the graft case.

Former Medan mayor Abdillah is now serving his five-year prison term, while former Makassar mayor Baso Amiruddin Maula and former Riau governor Saleh Djasit are both serving four-year sentences. Former West Java governor Danny Setiawan is currently standing trial.

During the trials, some witnesses and defendants testified that ministerial circulars from former home minister Hari Sabarno authorized regional officials to directly appoint a company to the project. (dre)
