INDONESIA: The government has targeted that, through its "The Internet goes to the village" program, all 72,000 villages in the country will have Internet access by the end of 2010, Minister of Information Muhammad Nuh said Saturday.

"We have targeted that the "The Internet goes to the village" program will be completed in 2010, so that we can move on to our next program, i.e. creating *smart villages'," Nuh said after attending the congress of the Association of Nahdlatul Ulama Students in Brebes, Central Java.

He explained that by the end of this year, a total of 32,000 villages, mostly in the western part of the country, will have been connected to the Internet. The government has allocated Rp 1.4 trillion (US$140 million) to finance the project this year.

The Internet connection to the villages will be managed by village officials and the government will not intervene in its operation.

"We will not establish a team to supervise it. We will let village officials supervise its operation," he was quoted by Antara state news agency as saying. - JP
