Cases of suicide in Bali increased to 134 cases in 2008 from 109 in 2007, a local police spokesman said Sunday.

"The rise [in suicide] is because of various problems affecting all people in the province," Bali Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Gde Sianyar was quoted by kompas.com as saying.

Buleleng had the highest number of suicides with 44 cases, followed by Karangasem with 25 cases, Jembrana 14, Bangli 13, Denpasar 10, Tabanan nine, Gianyar 12, Badung five and Tabanan nine cases.

Of the total 134 fatalities, 97 were men and 37 were women. Sixty-six suicide cases happened within farmer families, 45 in private firms and the rest in other places.

Gde Sugianyar called on the Balinese people to uphold religious values in order to minimize suicide.

He urged the government to pay more attention to poor people so that the suicide rate could be reduced.
