JAKARTA: Deputy Attorney General for General Crimes Abdul Hakim Ritonga said Monday that prosecutors nationwide have processed 578 election cases, of which 329 had been sent to courts.
"Most of the cases were related to vote buying and vote trading during the April 9 legislative election," Ritonga told a hearing with House Commission III.
According to Ritonga, the Attorney General's Office (AGO) has put on notice 917 prosecutors specialized in handling election-related cases in anticipation of the upcoming July 8 presidential election.
Lawmaker Gayus Lumbuun of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) urged the AGO to investigate the election cases more actively. "The police have dropped several cases. They always blame it on a lack of evidence. Therefore I suggest the AGO take initiative and not just wait for the police," he said. - JP
