Banten legislative council proposes Rp 600m for new councilors' inauguration

The secretariat of Banten legislative council is proposing a budget allocation of Rp 600 million (US$58,200) to hold the inauguration ceremony of 85 councilors-elect.
Ubaidilah, the council's secretary, said the money was needed to provide luxury hotel rooms and transportation for the councilors and their spouses, and a banquet for 2,500 invitees.
“We have to provide the rooms to accommodate the councilors as they come from various regencies,” he told tempointeraktif.com.
Ubaidiliah said the council had allocated Rp 196 million for the ceremony in its 2009 regional budget. “We are proposing to cover the rest through a budget revision,” he said.
The chairman of the council's budget committee Agus Puji Raharjo called the proposal “irrational.”
“So much for a ceremony. [The committee] has every right to refuse it,” he said. (dre)
