Hanura Party lawyer expelled from Constitutional Court hearing

On Wednesday, the Constitutional Court ended its final day of hearings on legislative election disputes by expelling the People’s Conscience Party’s (Hanura) lawyer, Gusti Randa, for protesting the court decision.

Gusti had apparently interrupted Constitutional Court Chief Mahfud MD continually as he attempted to read out the verdict, which only granted several of the demands of Gusti’s client’s lawsuit.

The court ordered the General Elections Commission (KPU) to hold an election re-run and vote recount in Tulang Bawang, Lampung.

Mahfud rejected Gusti’s interruptions and objections before ordering he leave the courtroom.

Gusti said the verdict was principally and fatally wrong because the court had examined faulty evidence and allowed the hearings to continue in the absence of the General Elections Commission (KPU) as the defendants.

Mahfud said that Gusti’s conduct in the courtroom was in contempt of court.

“What he said about the Court being unfair was his own claim. We already upheld the principle of fairness during the hearings,” Mahfud said. (fmb)
