Sacked PKB leader receives democracy award Effendy Choirie, recently dismissed as the chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB) at the House of Representatives, received Wednesday an award for his relentless efforts to uphold democracy. The award was held and presented by the NGO Professional Madani Society. Effendi was sacked from his post due to his constantly promoting the use of the House's inquiry rights into the alleged electoral roll fraud during the April 9 legislative elections. “He consistently upholds the people's right to vote, which is essential for democracy. We decided to present him with an award as a 'hero for democracy'," said the society’s Ismed. Effendy expressed his gratitude, saying he was proud to receive the award. “I’ve known Ismed since he was a student. He is also very persistent in his fight against authoritarian governance,” he said. (hdt)
