The Foreign Ministry in cooperation with its embassies in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur has organized an international exhibition on public services from Tuesday to Thursday at the Kartika Expo Center in Jakarta.

The exhibition is aimed at raising awareness for services available at the embassies, which have won the Foreign Ministry awards for high standards, amid the current blow of criticisms about the government's slow response to Indonesian migrant workers in need of help.

The exhibition is being held as part of the ministry's institutional reforms initiated by Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda nine years ago.

In a press release sent to The Jakarta Post by the ministry, Hassan said the reform was needed to ensure that Indonesian migrants, mostly working in informal sectors, could obtain better protection while staying abroad.

Indonesia was dealt a great blow after a series of cases about the abuse of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia and the Middle East were revealed. Reports of mistreatment, such as physical abuse and the withholding of salaries, are common as migrants are mostly sent overseas without proper education and a lack of information about where to seek protection and assistance in case of irregularities.

The exhibition also hosted a talk show featuring Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore Wardhana and Ambassador to Malaysia Da'i Bachtiar, the Foreign Ministry's director for migrant protection and legal assistance, Teguh Wardoyo, the executive director of Migrant Care, Anis Hidayah and ex-migrant workers in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
