The Association of Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI) said Thursday the quality of teachers remained poor as about 45 percent of them took up the profession at their family’s request.

A study by the ICMI’s qualified education movement program (Gerutas) found that only 54 percent out of the 300 senior high school teachers surveyed opted for the career by choice. Gerutas surveyed SMU teachers in Jakarta, Banten and South Sumatra.

“The figure may represent the situation of teachers nationwide. Many of them chose the profession at the request of their families or because they had been unemployed for a while,” he said in an education seminar on Thursday.

“Such teachers prefer complaining to improving the standards of their students.”

Gerutas, a new program in the ICMI, is aiming to train teachers to improve student standards to help upgrade the country’s education system.
