New suspect named in radio system bribery case

JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) declared a new suspect Wednesday in a graft case surrounding the procurement of intergrated radio systems for the Forestry Ministry in 2007.

The suspect is Anggoro Wijaya, director of PT Masaro Radiokom, the company that a 2007 Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) report showed was involved in the fictitious procurement of several radio communication units worth a total of Rp 13 billion (US$1.25 million).

"The defendant will be charged with violating the article on enriching oneself, other people or a corporation through causing losses to the state, and the article on authority abuse in the corruption law," said KPK deputy chairman Bibit Samad Rianto.

"We're still looking for Anggoro."

Anggoro is also suspected of bribing legislators, including, Yusuf Erwin Faishal from the National Awakening Party (PKB), who was sentenced earlier this year o four-and-a-half years by the Corruption Court for receiving bribes in the procurement project as well as in the conversion of a protected forest in Banyuasin, South Sumatra, in 2006. -JP
