PEKANBARU: A seventh-grader, Andri Febrianto Saputra, died Wednesday in a fire that gutted the Darun Nahdha Thawalib Bangkinang Islamic school in Kampar regency, Pekanbaru, Riau.

The blaze started at around 4 a.m., when all students, including Andri, were asleep, school executive Buya Syarizul Noer said.

"*Andri* was ill. It was too late when his friends asked him to save himself, and he was trapped by fire. Only his skull and ashes have been found and picked up by his family for burial at his village."

Kampar Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Muttaqien said the fire may have been triggered by candles, or kerosene lamps, being used during a power blackout. - JP
