Decreasing water flow to a dam in Indramayu, West Java, is posing a threat to the rice crops in the regency.

Firman Muntaco, head of the regency's water resource management, said Friday without more rain the regency's agriculture would be facing drought.

“The current water flow into the Bendung Rentang dam, which is used for irrigation over a large part of the regency, is only 70 cubic meters per second; whereas during the rainy season it reaches 193.5 cubic meter per second,” he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com

Firman said rice planted by local farmers at the beginning of the dry season had entered the critical flowering period.

“If not enough water is provided during this period, the crops will be spoiled,” he said. (dre)
