Vice President Jusuf Kalla is visiting several Islamic boarding schools (
pesantren) in Tasikmalaya and Ciamis regencies in West Java on Friday, Antara news agency has reported.
Tasikmalaya administration stated the visit was a working visit and not a campaign tour by Kalla, who is competing for the presidential seat in the July 8 election.
Kalla arrived at Wiradinata Airport in Tasikmalaya in a helicopter at around 8 a.m. and immediately headed to Suryalaya Pesantren in Pageur Ageung.
Later in the day, he is scheduled to visit Darusalam Pesantren in Cijantung and, after performing his Friday prayers there, he will visit two other pesantren before leaving for Garut.
Kalla and his running mate Wiranto have closed the popularity gap with the leading ticket of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono partly due to their persistence in luring Muslim voters. Surveys show that Kalla and Wiranto appeal more to Muslim voters than the other candidates. (dre)
