Adding another event to the already-festive Jakarta, Governor Fauzi Bowo on Saturday opened the 2009 Jakarta Book Fair in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
The nine-day event, which will run until next Sunday at Istora Senayan indoor stadium, gathers some 300 book publishers, offering the visitors a total collection of more than 7 million books.
In his remark, Fauzi said he fully supported all efforts to promote reading, especially to children and students.
"It is very important to teach our children to see books and reading as a part of life."
"But, unfortunately, I believe many of us are more familiar with cellular phones than reading, or even, buying books," he said, to the audiences' amusement.
The event, which is also planning to host several talkshows and book launch events, is offering visitors discounts of up to 70 percent on all products. (hwa)
