A Lion Air MD-90 aircraft blocked the runway at Selaparang Airport in Mataram for several hours Saturday afternoon, forcing two other carriers to delay flights bound for Jakarta.

The aircraft holding 165 passengers from Jakarta landed smoothly at the airport at 2.18 p.m. local time. However, the plane made a wrong turn causing the engine to malfunction.

“It was a human error. The pilot took a wrong turn, causing the engines to shut down. But the plane did not skid off the runway,” Agus Adi Pratomo from Selaparang Airport Management told journalists at the airport.

The incident delayed the departures of hundreds of passengers scheduled to fly on Garuda Indonesia flight GA 433 and a chartered Riau Airline flight, both destined for Jakarta.

Agus said the plane sustained no damage and was not grounded. But its flight for Jakarta scheduled for 3.10 p.m. local time was delayed until the airport could evacuate the plane.

Lion Air management in Mataram has yet to release any information regarding the incident.
