JAKARTA: Decreasing amounts of water flowing into a dam in Indramayu, West Java, is threatening the survival of rice and other crops in the regency.
Firman Muntaco, head of the regency's water resource management office, on Friday said without more rain the regency's agriculture would be facing droughts.
"The current flow of water into the Bendung Rentang dam, which is used for irrigation over a large part of the regency, is only 70 cubic meters per second, whereas during the rainy season it reaches 193.5 cubic meter per second," Firman said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Rice planted by local farmers at the beginning of the dry season had entered the critical flowering period, Firman said.
"If not enough water is provided during this period, the crops will be spoiled," he said. - JP
