JAKARTA: Police arrested Friday a gang of men suspected to have robbed several South Jakarta houses, including that of TV presenter Happy Salma.

The eight men in their late twenties, identified as Noce Ishak, Andika alias Mamat, Abri, Eriko, Edy Yusuf, German, Ahmad Ersan and Joko Pramono, are currently being held by the South Jakarta Police.

Suspected gang leader Mamat said as quoted by detik.com that he only found out after the burglary that the last house they had burgled was of a celebrity.

Mamat said the group's modus operandi was to enter the house by telling the maid they were there to fix the furniture. They would then take valuables from the rooms while no one was looking, he said.

"First we ask the maid. If the house owner is there, we don't proceed," Mamat said.

The group is suspected of having burgled a legislator's house in Pejaten, a travel agent's house in Ragunan, and others. - JP
