JAKARTA: Soap opera actress Alyssa Soebandono is on the warpath, saying that, given the persistent violence against children in the country, it’s high time Indonesia got a ministry to deal with children’s rights.
For three years now Alyssa has been the ambassador for children’s hotline TeSa 129, a line dedicated to receiving reports of cases of violence against children set up by the State Ministry for Women’s Empowerment.
TeSa also aims to provide accessible counseling via the telephone for children and teenagers in general.
“When I was offered the job, I accepted it immediately, as I realize how important the program is,” Alyssa, when making a commercial for a National Children’s Day event on July 23.
“I won’t be able to attend the event in person as I will be in Australia to finish my studies at Monash University,” she said. “But through this commercial, I can still in a way be there.”
The actress, who has starred in three movies and eight soap operas pointed out that not all Indonesian children have the privilege to have someone they can really talk to about their problems. — JP
