Indonesia is sending 10 athletes to the World University Games (Universiade) in Belgrade, which run from July 1 to 12.
The small contingent, arriving in the Serbian capital on Monday, hopes to emulate the national team’s achievement at the previous event in Bangkok two years ago, which saw Indonesia snatch two bronze medals in tennis and one in badminton.
This year, Indonesia will only participate in archery and taekwondo, two of the 15 medal events at the biennial event. The national contingent comprises athletes from six universities in Java and East Kalimantan, including Surabaya State University and Airlangga University, also in Surabaya.
The archery team of I Gusti Nyoman Puruhito, Kuswantoro, Fanny Andyanto, Dellie Threesyadinda, Farisah Asfarina, Weny Trisyanto won the gold medal at the Asian Archery Grand Prix in the Philippines last October.
The taekwondo team comprises Julius Fernando, Fransiska Valentina, Eka Sahara and Selviana J. Rosok.
The Universiade was first held in 1959 in Turin, Italy. Around 9,000 student athletes from 140 countries are participating in the 25th edition of the games this year.
