Tangerang to evict Angke River squatters

As part of its efforts to prevent flooding, the Tangerang administration will next week evict squatters living alongside the Angke River in Cipondoh district.
Tangerang Mayor Wahidin Salim said Monday his office would dispatch 400 public order officers to demolish the shanties and take out all the trash clogging up the river.
“The Cipondoh district office has already warned the squatters, but they ignored the warning,” Wahidin told kompas.com.
The dwellings, he added, had choked up the river, thus causing it to overflow more frequently during heavy rainfall.
“Many streets and thousands of homes get submerged in 40 to 60 centimeters of water during the rainy season,” Wahidin said. (ewd)
