Cash bonuses amounting to at least Rp 2 billion (US$200,000) lie in wait for Sriwijaya FC players, following their successful defense of the Copa Indonesia soccer championship trophy on Sunday.

The club will earn Rp 1.4 billion from the tournament sponsor, while South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin has promised Rp 500 million to the team, not to mention a cash bonus from the club’s owner, PT Sriwijaya Optimis Mandiri (SOM).

Alex told the team to perform better next season for the coveted league and Cup double. Sriwijaya FC will also represent Indonesia in the Asian Champions League, along with league champion Persipura of Jayapura, the team it beat in the Cup final.

SOM president director Dodi Reza Alex said the club management would improve the welfare of its players, including their housing, following the victory. He added the management was considering buying new players in the face of the uphill challenge on the international stage.

Sriwijaya led 1-0 when Persipura walked out of the final match at the Palembang, South Sumatra, club’s home base, Jakabaring Stadium, after 60 minutes on Sunday, in protest at a red card given to a player from the Papuan team.
