YOGYAKARTA: The crime rate in Yogyakarta, dominated by thefts and violence, has seen an overall decline this year.
Yogyakarta Police data shows crimes and public disorder in the first six months of the year stood at 2,696 cases, a fall from the 2,881 cases in the same period last year.
However, the number of unresolved cases this year has increased compared to last year. In the first six months of 2008, 1,286 cases were resolved, but in the corresponding period this year, only 971 were resolved.
Although the crime rate has dropped in general, crimes recorded in Sleman regency have been on the rise.
"Disturbances and public disorder in Sleman have risen in 2009 compared to last year," Yogyakarta Police chief Brig. Gen. Sunaryono said Monday.
Based on police data, 824 crimes - mostly theft - were recorded in Sleman in the first six months of the year, up from 795 crimes last year.
In the first six months of 2009, the crime rates in Yogyakarta municipality, Bantul, Gunungkidul and Kulonprogo regencies have all dropped. - JP
