The presidential candidates have so far failed to outline any programs prioritizing environmental issues, research from Greenpeace shows.
Greenpeace forest campaigner Joko Arief said the three presidential candidates had so far offered no detailed programs on how they intended to protect the environment, particularly the forests.
“It seems environment and forest affairs are not yet “sexy” enough issues in this election for the presidential candidates to “sell” them in their campaigns,” he said.
Greenpeace assessed the agendas and pledged programs for each presidential candidate.
Joko said hopeful Megawati Soekarnoputri, in her recent campaign in Kalimantan, promised to impose a moratorium on timber logging to help protect the forest.
“But, through other programs, the pair [Megawati and Prabowo] also plan to clear about six million hectares of land to be used for the agriculture sector,” he said.
Jusuf Kalla and Wiranto said there was a need for regulations and adaptations related to climate change. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has promised to improve the environment but offered no concrete plans through any programs.
