JAKARTA: Indonesia has sent 10 young athletes to participate in the biennial University Olympiad (Universiade) in Belgrade, Serbia, from July 1-12.
Arriving in Belgrade on Monday, the team hopes to at least replicate the country's success it achieved last time it competed in the event at Bangkok, Thailand. There, it won two bronze medals in tennis and one in badminton.
This year, Indonesia is participating in archery and taekwondo out of the 15 sports being contested. The team consists of students from six universities across Java as well as from East Kalimantan.
Universiade, also known as the World University Games, was first held in 1959 in Turin, Italy. Around 9,000 student athletes from 140 countries are participating in this year's 25th event. - JP
