BANDUNG, West Java: West Bandung Police have named Fatimah Mahroji, the wife of the Bandung Education Agency head, Oji Mahrji, a suspect in the misappropriation of school renovation funds, widely blamed for the collapse of a schoolhouse.

West Bandung Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Baskoro Tri Prabowo said that in addition to Fatimah, who served as the Sejahtera IV elementary school principal and project head, police had also named a renovation project partner as another new suspect.

Police had named project supervisor Agus Suganda a suspect a week after the school collapsed at the end of March.

Two classrooms collapsed just a week after being "renovated", with the project funded by West Java legislative role-sharing funds worth Rp 320 million in 2008.

The funds should have been used to renovate eight rundown classrooms, with the cost of each classroom at Rp 40 million.

However, under Fatimah's "supervision", only seven classrooms were refurbished, and a house for the school watchman, a library and eight toilets were built.

Investigations have revealed the project failed to meet the planning and construction budget. - JP
